Google Gemini App Adds Temporary Chats and Personalized Responses: What Users Need to Know

Google is continuing its push to improve the Gemini AI chatbot with two major updates for Android users. The new features — Temporary Chats and Personalized Responses — are designed to strike a balance between privacy and personalization.

🔹 Temporary Chats: A Step Towards Privacy

One of the most requested features in any AI assistant is privacy. With Gemini’s Temporary Chats, users can now start conversations that won’t be stored permanently or used to train Google’s AI models. These chats are visible only for a short duration and are automatically deleted after 72 hours.

This mode is ideal for situations where you want to discuss sensitive topics, such as personal health questions, financial planning, or private matters, without leaving a permanent trace. It gives users more confidence to interact freely with Gemini without worrying about how their data might be used later.

Google has clarified that the information from Temporary Chats will only be kept briefly to generate accurate responses and to improve immediate user experience, but not for long-term AI training.

🔹 Personalized Responses: A Smarter AI

Alongside privacy, Google is also making Gemini more context-aware. With the Personalized Responses feature, Gemini can now remember details from past conversations and use them to create more relevant and tailored answers.

For example, if you previously discussed your favorite TV series or hobbies, Gemini can take that into account when you later ask for recommendations — whether it’s a birthday party idea, travel suggestion, or even book recommendations. This helps make interactions feel less robotic and more personal, almost like chatting with a knowledgeable friend.

Google says this personalization is powered by the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, with plans to extend it to Gemini 2.5 Flash and other regions in the future.

🔹 User Control and Transparency

While Gemini now offers personalization, Google has made sure users are in control. Inside the Gemini app’s Personal Context settings, users can:

  • Enable or disable past chat history
  • Delete individual chats or clear all memory
  • Add instructions for how Gemini should respond (e.g., prefer short answers, use bullet points, or respond in a specific style)

This level of transparency ensures that while Gemini remembers user preferences, it does so under user consent.

🔹 Comparison with Competitors

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has offered a Temporary Chat option for quite some time. By introducing this feature now, Google is aligning Gemini with user expectations around privacy-first AI. Similarly, the personalization feature is Google’s answer to memory functions rolled out by competitors like Anthropic’s Claude AI.

🔹 Availability

Currently, Temporary Chats are rolling out globally, while Personalized Responses are limited to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in select regions. Notably, these personalization tools are not yet available in the European Economic Area, UK, or Switzerland due to regulatory restrictions. However, Google has confirmed expansion in the coming weeks.

🔹 Final Thoughts

With these two updates, Gemini is becoming not just a chatbot, but a smarter and safer AI assistant. Users who value privacy can rely on Temporary Chats, while those who want more relevant answers can benefit from Personalized Responses. By giving control back to the users, Google is trying to build trust while enhancing the overall AI experience.
